Talnua Distillery Single Pot Still-Triple Distilled Whiskey Aged in Ex-Peated Casks

We all retain and process information differently. Some retain by writing, memorizing after a swift glance, or in this case by reading. I’d like to take you back to one of my favorite places to visit in the U.S, Colorado. I have the best neighbor ever ! He had a team building trip to Denver and he offered to bring me back some Talnua! Ergot, indulge me!

Here is another banger of an expression from Talnua. Their single pot stilled whiskey aged in ex-peated casks. This is a harmonious marriage of malted and unmalted barley (50/50 blend respectively). Here’s the crash course to malted vs. unmalted.

MALTED vs. UNMALTED

Malted in this case barley (or grain) that has been germinated and then heated to stop the growth process. This method secretes an enzyme that aids in the conversion of grain starches to fermentable sugars, that eventually convert to alcohol. BOOM! crash course complete. Unmalted on the other hand, is the opposite- it does not go through the process of germination etc. So why the blend, what’s the big deal.?!?! When you combine Malted barley with unmalted, the malted barley will impact the look and taste of the whiskey. Whereas unmalted barley will impart heft of texture- the addicting cereal funk. It’s robust and unforgettable!

COLOR: As you pour, you are welcomed with this sun-rising golden elixir hue.

NOSE: It resonates with the sweetness of Belvita cookies. It ‘s a love affair with cereal funk, vanilla with a subtle surprising essence of apricot.

TASTE: GOOSEBUMPS!!!!!!!! It’s a sharp, crisp intro to a delectable essence of salty brine. It’s bright and crisp. It flows mid-palate taking a stop in subtle sweetness that mimics a Rosé wine.

FINISH: The sip bids adieux with a medium lasting finish that serves as a juxtaposition to the next sip.

You know what comes to mind with this amazing expression is Oysters. The underlined salty/brine essence is a match made in heaven. I want to be in the northeast during the summer months enjoying a crab boil or right back in Arvada at Talnua, taking in the relaxed, unpretentious vibe of the distillery that oozes warmth, a familial welcome and love.

If you are ever in Denver, head toward Arvada. Make Talnua one of your stops while you are there. You will not regret it! Plus, their copper pot stills are a sight to see. I love the Talnua product line. Don’t sleep on it!!

Until next time………………clink clink beautiful people : )
